Product Description

Product Description
Depressive mood swings can affect people of both sexes and every age. This book describes the causes, symptoms and treatment of depressive moods. Dr McKeon discusses fully the ways in which mood swings can be recognized - the signs of depression and its opposite, an unnatural elation. He also reveals the problems that can arise if the illness is not diagnosed - it may lead to alcohol dependence, overspending, sexual excess, and even, if the depression is deep enough, to suicide. He gives advice on how patients and their families can learn to cope and points out that most sufferers come to term with and accept the problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me realise I wasn't going Mad!, 11 Feb 2001
By A Customer
After many years of suffering and being told to Pull my socks up or calm down - being thought of as Mentally Ill, not knowing what the hell was going on, taking all the tablets in the world and wondering why I never seemed to get any better, I bought this book, and didn't read it.

It didn't make me feel any better ...... I thought owning it would work! .... read it, but read it with the family, show your friends, it speaks more words than is printed within and no matter how hard you try you can't tell your friends and family how you feel.... BUT THIS BOOK CAN AND DOES. - don't leave it on the shelf.

It didn't cure me but the hell it stops the illness causing bigger problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very non-frightening book about a frightening illness, 4 Dec 1999
As a recently diagnosed sufferer of Manic Depression I found the book one of the comprehensive guides to the illness that I have come across. I had spent ten years in total confusion as to why I acted as I did, with numerous affairs under my belt as well as the other things that to the bystander seam as though you are just totally reckless. When I first recieved my diagnosis I was relieved, but this soon turned to confusion as I was bombarded by so much different advice.

This book helped me to clear the confusion and to dismiss unhelpful advice. It still remains on my bedside cabinet to steer me through the bad times when depression overwhelms and there seems no way out.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has MD or who looking after someone suffering from this condition. It helps you to remember that there is a life after MD is diagnosed and it is possible to get up again and join the rest of society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Views of a sufferer, 31 Jul 2003
By David Andrews (Rotherham, S. Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent book to describe in layman's terms what the different forms of depression are about. It is useful both to the sufferer and those who are close to them who often have to cope with the problems of their family member's depression. It describes clearly the sorts of treatment which are available and encourages people who perhaps would have just accepted depression as 'one of those things to put up with' to make an effort to get medical help and make life a lot better.
Since reading and acting on this book, I have had a completely new life, and I commend it to anyone who has to deal with their own or their family's depression.
