4.0 out of 5 stars Factually very good but lacking intuitive depth, 2 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This book provides a comprehensive dossier on the life of Bob Marley. It gives a detailed picture of the singer's early life and explains his rooltessness and restlessness. The author has researched his subject well, not only speaking to key figures in Marley's life such as his mother, wife, fellow musicians and lovers, but also the people who remember him as a child when he was a goatherd for his grandfather. The book details the development of his music and his rastafarianism, the ups and downs of the Wailers, his fight to get noticed, the rawness of his live performances and his brave fight against the cancer which killed him. Yet the book makes no attempt to explain the enigma that was Marley. Perhaps this is because the author felt it could not be done, But the ommission takes the soul out of the the book. There is no observation on the rumours that Marley encouraged and/or perpetrated intimidation and violence. Nor is there any insight into the enduring but tumultuous relationship with his wife Rita. Although the book was written two years after Marley died it was updated in 1993 and does not include any observation from Marley's many children. While the update explains the fall out of the court cases which were brought to establish Marley's legatees,it makes no comment on the role of Rita Marley or the rumours that violence and intimidation took place before and after the cases were heard. Worth a read but should be counter-balanced with a more insightful work.
