2.0 out of 5 stars Missed the mark, 3 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This biography, one of several about Hunter S Thompson, has a few interesting details but overall really isn't worth the effort. There has yet to be a definitive biography of the outlaw journalist; the best thing to do is to read his volumes of letters and get information straight from the horse's mouth instead. Next move's yours.

2.0 out of 5 stars When was he born again?, 20 Nov 2007
Its pretty telling that chapter one of this biography, which claims to be 'a sharp and savvy profile' of Hunter S Thompson, is subtitled 'Louisville (1939-1955)' because the good doctor was actually born in 1937... Perry goes on to compound this error in the text, thereby clearing up any feeling that this might have been a typo of some sort. While its perhaps not that big a deal to get a date wrong, its a pretty lame way to start a biography and indicates both a certain amount of tardiness on the author's part and the level at which this biography is operating. How can we be expected to take a biography seriously when the author hasn't even managed to successfully establish when his subject was born? Well, you can't, but that doesn't really matter because with the exception of a few (untrustworthy?) details most of the content isn't new anyway. The preface explains that this is an unauthorised biography and goes on to claim that its a good thing Hunter didn't cooperate because if he had he may well have censored much of the content, meaning that 'many of the stories related here would have remained untold'. However, once you start reading, it soon becomes clear that nearly all the content has been gleaned from Thompson's existing published material (dating from 1992 when this biography was first published). Perry frequently recounts an event only to then state that it was described in such and such an article by Thompson and is to be found in 'The Great Shark Hunk' or 'Songs of the Doomed' or wherever. Such references carry a sort of apologetic tone, almost willing the reader to ditch this book immediately and return to the originals. The overall effect is to suggest Perry's biography was cobbled together by simply reading Thompson's published anthologies and churning out a shorthand version of events in chronological order, removing any insight or depth in the process. If you're genuinely interested in Hunter S Thompson then why not just read his work in the original? You'll learn far more about him, and the events he wrote about, than is available here...
