1.0 out of 5 stars Very limited value, 23 May 2007
By Petri Raitio (Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The back cover of this book has three ticks in boxes labeled "Beginners", "Intermediate", and "Advanced". If these are targeted reader categories, I would have left all three boxes cleared.

The book is little more than a walk-through of the Vista Media Center user interface and functionality, a rudimentary user manual. Only very few of the 302 pages go into any detail beyond the immediate surface level. Intermediate and advanced readers will find no useful information in this book (for example, not one of the useful registry setting customizations are mentioned), and I'm afraid the novice will not have his/her basic questions answered, either.

The text seems to be quickly converted from an XP Media Center book, since many labels are not from Vista Media Center (e.g. "My TV" and "My Videos"). And for some reason, Chapter 7 contains two consecutive sections named "Using Videos" - in the table of contents they are listed as "Using Videos" and "Using My Videos".

Finally, there is a glossary of some 15 terms. I stopped reading at the second term: "DVB-T" is explained as "Digital video tuner card format".

I have never before returned a book to Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good guide for beginers, 25 May 2007
I disagree with the other review. I have used the book to help me setup Media Center so it works for me, I used it to set up TV recording and video librarys.
I didn't want a book that baffles me and this book is in plain english.
I love my Media Center system now!
