Book Description
This new atlas of breeding birds is the significantly improved follow-up to the bestselling previous volume published in 1976. Most species accounts include three maps, one showing the current breeding distribution, one in full-colour showing relative abundance of the species throughout its range and one highlighting changes in distribution between the current and original surveys. The text, tables and vignette complete each double page spread. A detailed introduction outlines the methods used in the survey work and explains the various analyses of the data gathered. Appendices give details of rare breeders and a wealth of extra, tabular material. This new atlas is an indispensable reference for every ornithologist with an interest in the birds of Britain and Ireland. "The most important work on British birds this century...a landmark in ornithological history and a vital resource to be used by British birdwatchers and those fighting for their conservation." --New Scientist, March 1994
"A monumental work--a must for anyone with any kind of interest in Britain's breeding birds. Treat yourself to an education." --Birdwatch, March 1994
"(The New Atlas is) a mine of knowledge, easily accessible with its highly attractive, jargon-free treatment." --The Countryman, Spring '94
"'576 pages of birding brilliance' I defy any birdwatcher not to pick up this fabulous book and wallow in facts, maps, figures and highly readable texts." --Country Talk
Synopsis
The previous volume of this atlas was the result of the first national survey of breeding birds in Britain and Ireland and its maps presented data only in the confirmed or probable breeding of each species in each grid square. In this more detailed volume, each species account includes three maps, one showing breeding distribution as before, one in full colour showing relative abundance of the species throughout its range, and one highlighting changes in distribution between the current and original surveys. A text, tables and vignette complete each double-page spread. A detailed introduction outlines the methods used in the survey work and explains the various analyses of the data gathered. Appendices give details of rare breeders as well as extra tabular data.
