In the early Seventies, Oz was an 'underground' magazine which catered to the interests of the counter-culture that had sprung up during and Sixties, regarding sex, drugs, rock and roll and an anarchistic politics. Already regarded by the main stream with a jaundiced and suspicious eye, when Oz turned an issue over to schoolchildren to write and edit, the conservative powers went into hysterical mode and arrested the owner/editors to charge them with the corruption of minors. Oddly, since this issue was written by children for themselves, it was children corrupting their own morals simply by expressing themselves without the customary self-censorship they would normally apply when speaking in front of adults.

If you are interested in the end of the Sixties, when some causes were being lost and some won, I can't recommend highly enough this transcript of the longest and most expensive obscenity trial in British history. All the characters are there: John Peel, Germaine Greer, and so on. You can get a very good feel for the period from this. And also it is bloody hilarious!

I bought this book when it came out and foolishly let it disappear. Not the most interesting of reads but an icon of the age and worthy of a place on the bookshelf. And Topolski's drawings are just so good.

HASH(0x9db2087c) out of 5 stars biased account of the trial 20 May 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is very easy to read, although it is difficult to find. Tony Palmer recounts the OZ trial--one of the longest obscenity trials in history. The background and the trial itself is described very well. My gripe about the novel is that it IS a biased account of the trial, so one cannot form his or her own opinions about the obscenity of OZ magazine--Schoolkids Issue. For those with no background on this trial, it arose from OZ 28, the Schoolkids Issue. Kids, 14-18, edited, wrote, and illustrated for one issue of OZ. Neville, the publisher, allowed the adolescents to express how they felt. Many people found this offensive (because they thought he was targeting children). Although this novel is biased, it does give one information about the trial--since there is such limited imformation about it. Another novel to check out is _Hippie Hippie Shake_ by Richard Neville.
