Product Description

From the Publisher

Marlowe is privileged to reintroduce William Kotzwinkle!

About the author...FROM RICHARD BAUSCH: "I think William Kotzwinkle is our Boccaccio--there isn't anyone funnier, smarter, or more inventive."

FROM KURT VONNEGUT: "Kotzwinkle is one of the few American writers in complete control of his material."

About Dr. Rat, FROM NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS: "A clout from the pen of a modern zen master of the literary world."

FROM THE NEW SCIENTIST: "A Comic Triumph...Doctor Rat is thoroughly anthropomorphic, very funny, and not lacking in the bite of truth essential to good satire."

FROM THE LONDOM TIMES: "Doctor Rat is Weird and Wonderful...A fantastic and ferocious Animal Factory Farm, an anthropomorphic, sentimental, and splendidly nutty Magnificat with echoes of Blake."

FROM THE GUARDIAN: "A very disturbing book...the Anti-Vivisection Society should consider distributing free copies."

FROM THE LISTENER: "A faint but authentic Blakeian echo in Mr. Kotzwinkle's rage, gives the book the voltage necessary to bypass insulating ideas and strike right into the emotions. If it is not a criticism of life, it is certainly a savage review of it."

FROM PLAYBOY: "Disney isn't going to pick it up for a feature length cartoon." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doctor Rat vs The World, 7 Jun 2004
By Chris Hall "Dreadlocksmile" (Cardiff, Wales) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Doctor Rat (Hardcover)
A darkly humorous take on the use of animals in human research. Seen from the eyes of a lab rat, you have a bizarre and disorientating angle on the world. Taking to lead other animals in a revolution to make the world theirs once again, Doctor Rat is a political statement on the way we treat our planet and its inhabitants. A novel to question your views and moral standing on the ethics of animal testing. You will laugh and smirk at some of the writing, but there will always be that underlining notion of cruelty to others. I hope more people get to read this novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enlighting tale of animals used for medical research, 8 Jun 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dr Rat (Paperback)
Entertaining tale of the humans use of animals for medical research.

This book allows you to look at a different point of view in animal research. from the animals side. What do they think? Do they feel? Do they care? Should we, as humans, care about these things? This book is not for kids.

Dr. Rat is an exploration of the use of animals in human research. You are given the view of a lab rat that has been in the research lab just a little too long. He is missing various parts and is quite mad. He talks in poems that make a lot of sense when you stop to listen to them. He is as smart as he is savey in the 'way' of the lab and leads the animals in a revolution to take over the world.

Very entertaining, much more of a social statement than other books of his,and makes you think about the use of animals in medical research and if it is the 'right' thing to do. A must read for those of used who think we are liberal and open minded. And even for those who believe strongly in animal reseach.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Beethoven would write had he been an author., 1 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dr Rat (Paperback)
I actually read the book a number of years ago, and too this day I still haven't found anyone who's heard of the Mr. Kotzwinkle. He, and the book, stand with writers such as Steve Weiner's Laboratory of love and Jamerson Darke's Love is when the Soil Falls as being amongst the most greatly underestimated writers of all.
