Product Description

Product Description

Kirsten Glasbrook's beautiful designs, with their brilliant colour ranges and evocative images, are combined with easy-to-follow instructions and detailed step-by-step photographs to create this inspiring guide. The tapestries the author makes are strong and durable and they look wonderful on walls - adding both colour and a feeling of warmth and comfort. Miniature designs are worked using very fine yarns, or they can be worked on a huge scale with thick bundles of mixed fibres. The basic techniques are similar and all you need is a frame or a very simple loom. This book contains everything you need to know about the materials you need to get started, how to start and how to create wonderful patterns, landscapes and images. The author uses her stunning work to illustrate the techniques and a series of projects teach how to build up confidence and skills. This colourful, exciting book offers a rich source of stimulating and innovative ideas that will appeal to all abilities.

About the Author

Kirsten Glasbrook trained as a weaver in Denmark where she was born. After moving to London in the 1960's she spent time restoring antique tapestries. She taught part time at the Bath Academy of Art for many years, and now lives and works in Devon, running workshops and classes for adults and children. Her commissions have included work for the Forestry Commission and numerous private collectors in the UK and other countries. Using mainly wool, linen and cotton, she designs and weaves tapestries, often with a mythological, mystical or meditative theme. The weaving techniques are simple and traditional and the brilliant colour ranges, and diversity of texture in the different yarns, are a constant challenge and excitement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners, 24 Nov 2004
This is a visually stimulating book show-casing the author's vibrant use of colour and techniques. The instructions given for the techniques, based around producing a sampler, are simple and straight forward. The pictures to accompany the instructions are clear and easy to follow. The book itself makes interesting reading and there is a wonderful selection of the artist's own work - used to both stimulate ideas and illustrate techniques. More information could have been provided about sourcing resources and materials but the author herself has a web-site where information can be acquired. Overall an excellent book which should inspire beginners and experienced tapestry weavers -highly recommended inspiring stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Insight, 13 Jul 2009
I met Kirsten Glasbrook a few years ago at Art In Action in Oxfordshire and was impressed by her work close up. It is quite magnificient. Her book is delightful and very clear and simple for the beginner to this wonderful artform. The gallery of her wonderfully contemporary and vibrantly colourful tapestries is most enjoyable. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars visual introduction to Tapestry weaving, 28 Oct 2009

(REAL NAME)
I had started weaving as a complementary craft to spinning in evening classes. This book gave me clear reminders about the set-up etc required when not in a class situation. It would therefore prove an informative book to start projects but at the same time allowing the reader to be creative
