Detailed instructions reveal the intricacies of working with silk thread on silk fabric, and clear photographs show how to create beautiful embroideries.

From the Author
In this book I've tried to show my passion and enthusiasm for a timeless and exquisite art. I hope it will encourage more people to follow 'Nui-do' - The Way of the Needle.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good book, 1 Jul 2004
By A Customer
This is a really poorly produced book. The designs are poor and the drawings wobbly; the stitching quality is novice level. The author says she has studied at Kurenai-kai for nine years! I don't think so, Kurenai-kai is a fully professional workshop near Togane city in Japan and nine years there is a long time.......to not learn correct technique and good draftsmanship. Maybe she means she attended some courses through the Japanese Embroidery Center in the USA with the odd visit to Japan! hmmmmm............If you want to study this beautiful craft, buy Shuji Tamura's book and learn the correct techniques from a master

1.0 out of 5 stars An insult to 1600 years of tradition of Japanese Embroidery, 15 Dec 2001
By A Customer
An embroiderer, who wishes to study this craft with a competent teacher, would have to re-learn the techniques put forth by the author. She has altered the traditional techniques, which have created the beautiful designs seen on century old and modern day obi and kimono. If you need inspiration, best to follow the traditional techniques put forth in "The Traditional Techniques of Japanese Embroidery" by Shuji Tamura. Be inspired by the beauty within, and set your goals high. You will never attain this level by following the authors instructions.
While the book offers good photography, the drawings and methods described are crude. Good craftsmanship, which develops with time is not apparent in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best "how to" book I've read on an arts & crafts subject, 27 Nov 2001
In the "Beginners Guide...", Julia Gray has opened my eyes to a world of design and beauty that not only surprised me but delighted me. Throughout the book the text is complimented by excellent photography that not only demostrates the techniques the author is describing but that make the title a worthy addition to any coffee table. It is a beautiful book whose illustrations of both the craft and the country of Japan will make your visitors "ohhh" if you happen to leave it on display.

As someone who has dabbled in stitch-craft (cross-stitch, etc)and who has developed a love for the fine designs it is possible to achieve in those disciplines I approached the book with a little trepidation. Only because everything I had known about Japanese embroidery left me a little daunted at the prospect of working with such fine materials as are required in this work. I needn't have worried. Ms. Gray's book is written in a manner that is very easy to read and (importantly) understand. Her love for her subject is evident. According to her biog. she researches thoroughly and I for one am convinced and pleased that she does. The research is obvious in the descriptions that she gives of the inspirations for the pieces of her work on view in the book. Put it this way, I want to see the maples in autumn in Japan and the "three friends of winter" (plum, pine and bamboo for the uninitiated). And even if you don't feel the same as me on reading this book, you will, if at all interested in the craft of stitching, be itching to get your hands (or rather your fingertips, as the silks are so fragile) on some Habotai or Shioze! Buy the book and you will understand what I mean.
