Product Description

Blackwork is a 16th-century embroidery technique in which monochrome designs are created by embroidering a large variety of counted-thread geometric patterns in black thread. This guide covers everything from design and transferring the design to the fabric to the choice of fabric, threads and stitches, with many stitch diagrams and suggested patterns. There is a host of blackwork pictures, both traditional and modern, as well as ideas for working with coloured threads.

This a charming little book, full of ideas for someone new to blackwork. It shows a very wide range of styles and stitches and makes you really want to try it for yourself. I found it a refreshing change to find an embroidery book that wasn't merely dsigns to copy, but showed you what the technique was really capable of.

I agree with 'Hope this helps'who was very generous in giving the book 3 stars. Although not an expert, I have been doing blackwork for a number of years and found this book to be almost totally useless. The finished designs in the book are beautiful and wetted my appetite, but how to go about copying them or even creating something similar is not shown. Neither are any of the blackwork fill-in patterns shown clearly on a graph, like you would expect, but just shown on finished material so that it is impossible to see how the patterns are worked.

If you would like a really helpful blackwork book, with lots of inspirational tips and dozens of patterns to choose from, try Beginners Guide to Blackwork by Lesley Wilkins.

This book gives some basic stitches but that is all, the rest is about materials and how to create your own designs and use colour. Great if you are creative enough to design your own pictures otherwise choose a book with patterns to follow.
