5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read intro to the genetic revolution - changing life, 14 Dec 1999
By P. Dixon - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book made headlines when first published in 1993 (updated since), with sensational reports of a Bristish scientist attempting to clone a human being for spare parts (cull the fetus). Many of the startling predictions made then have already been fulfilled.

Every aspect of gene technology is covered from GM foods to germ warfare, human cloning, designer babies, gene screening and medical breakthroughs.

Computer technology changes what we do - but gene technology changes who we are. How many human genes does an animal have to have to gain human rights? Answer: 1.6% if the right 1.6%. (Monkeys are 97% human genetically).

"We urgently need gene technology to cure disease and feed the world but we do need to ask what kind of world we are creating now we have the ability to alter the very basis of life itself."

Dr Patrick Dixon is a physician and a futurist, a well-know international lecturer on global trends and has been heavily involved in media debate on gene issues over the last six years.

His web pages have up to 110,000 hits a week while his cloning bulletin board has had over 50,000 message reads in a few months...

A wonderful book. After you read it you won't be able to think about cloning the same way again. Great for debates and such! Patrick Dixon takes a powerful stance.
