Product Description

Synopsis
Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Jim Clark's epic victory in the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix, this biography by a fellow Scot who knew Clark before he had ever stepped in a racing car, has been endorsed by his family. It looks beyond his motorsport career, and offers information about his farming background, his Scottish heritage, and the man behind the clean-cut boyish image. It celebrates Clark's 1967 Dutch victory in a Ford Cosworth-powered Lotus which was the first time a new, untried engine won its maiden race, and his position as 1963 and 1965 Formula 1 World Champion and how in 1965 became the first non-American to win the Indianapolis 500. The text is enhanced by colour photographs, Ford archive material, and pictures from the Clark family's own collection - and interviews with Clark's family and friends, his long-term girlfriend Sally Swart, Ian Scott Watson, Jackie Stewart and Rob Walker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fititng tribute to a great driver., 5 Oct 2003

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
An incisive, all-encompassing biography of the man many believe to have been the greatest racing driver of all time, well-illustrated, elegiac in tone and yet not afraid to look deeply into Jimmy's character. A splendid book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Portrait of the Greatest Ever Driver, 10 May 2006
Outstanding book about the greatest ever Formula One driver from someone reasonably close to him. Like many books about Jim Clark I don't think it even scratches the surface of what went on with him and what he actually did in a car, but that's because he was just so secretive. A lot of what Jim Clark did is simply put down to natural talent most of the time, but he must have done a great deal of thinking as well. His race tactics of driving the first lap as quickly as possible when everyone else was still asleep and building an advantage early on in the race are often attributed to people Senna or Schumacher, but he was doing it decades earlier.

Drives such as Monza 1967 when he was a lap down and made it up, and the wet Spa race in 1965 he won when his gear stick kept coming out and he had to drive one handed for three quarters of the distance and his strange manner of driving make him almost certainly better than people like Fangio or Senna. The Spa incident isn't even mentioned in the book because Clark only recounted it to the Lotus Team Manager after the race on the plane to Indianapolis, so Dymock probably didn't even know about it! Everything was just so matter of fact with him. There was no talking to the press about the difficulties he had like Fangio or certain other modern drivers, and there was no "struggle" going on like there was with someone like Senna. However, the book gives you as complete a portrait as possible of Clark whilst still leaving an awful lot of mystery in place - as all legends need to have it seems.

This highlights the great difficulty with writing a Jim Clark book, but Eric Dymock has managed it better than anyone else could have. The photos are gorgeous as well. As Eric says at the end of the book, rather modestly:

"Tall, spare, thoughtful Dan signed the picture of both of them at the speedway. "You know Eric," he said with a sigh. "He was a very special guy." Clever man. He summed Jim up in half a dozen words better than I have in all 70,000."

Take his advice and you'll miss out on one of the greatest books you can own if you're a racing fan.
