Product Description

Synopsis

Leon Greenman was born in London in 1910. His paternal grandparents were Dutch, and at an early age, after the death of his mother, his family moved to Holland, where Leon eventually settled with his wife, Esther, in Rotterdam. Leon was an antiquarian bookseller, and as such travelled to and from London on a regular basis. In 1938, during one such trip, he noticed people digging trenches in the streets and queuing up for gas masks. He hurried back to Holland with the intention of collecting his wife and return with her to England. The whispers of war were growing louder and louder. In May 1940, Holland was overrun by the Nazis, by which time Leon and his family had been effectively abandoned by the British Consulate and stranded with neither passports nor money. Eventually, they were deported to Birkenau where Esther and their small son, Barney, were gassed on arrival. Leon was chosen with 49 others for slave labour. This book tells the story of Leon's remarkable survival, of the horrors he saw and endured at Auschwitz, Monowitz and during the Death March to Gleiwitz and Buchenwald camp, where he was eventually liberated.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book should be on the national curriculum for schools., 7 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Leon Greenman, a remarkable man who was a victim of Nazi persecution, keeps the horrors of his dreadful and harrowing past alive in the pages of his book for all to see. His hope is that the Nazi atrocities of the mid-20th Century will never be repeated.

This book is easy to read. Leon writes as though he is talking to you. This writing style is the only way that can do justice to the content. The book highlights the very worst of the human race - yet we see glimmers of the very best of the human race too.

The historic facts of the Nazi occupation during WW2 come alive, and the picture section rounds off the book very well.

Would I recommend this book? If I could afford to, I would buy it for everyone I know. Why? To keep Leon's memories alive long after he has gone- lest we forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful man, but a harrowing story to tell..., 6 Jan 2003
By A Customer
I read, and eventually bought this book after Leon spoke to my school sixth-form. It tells the story of the plight of so many jewish victims of the hideous persecution of the German Concentration camps.

Leon's personal story is one of huge sadness but one that everyone should know about.

Everyone should buy this book, and if you do get the chance to speak to this wonderful, elderly man, take the oppurtunity.

5.0 out of 5 stars i have had the pleasure of meeting him, 14 Feb 2002
By A Customer
the day before writing this book, i had the honour of meeting this fantastic gentleman on a school vsot. he spoke to us for 2 hours about his story, such an emotional one at that. leon (as he wished us to call him) explained that he had to find out in books after the war the fate of wife esther and son barney, this was shoking. his life at various camps was hard, living off no food nor water or anything for years occasionally he got raw potato skins to eat, yet how these people survived years of this beats me. it was disgusting to see that only 8years ago when leon was 83, he received a death threat from a neo nazi. this book should be read by all, it captures the true events, things people could not possibly imagine.read it, you have no idea about the holocaust until you have read it
