This book will never win a prize for literary content, but if you're going to get serious about Portable Appliance Testing it's this season's must have and it will get you through the C&G exam. Somewhat expensive (hence 4*s) - to be expected maybe? - electrical engineers are probably not best known for their writing skills so there must be a rarity premium. Tells you what you need to know and lots of stuff you don't - hardcore information and good for insomnia too. The Amazon combo deal including this title and "PAT - Portable Appliance Testing: In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment" by Brian Scaddan is excellent and gives you the only two documents you really need. Well worth the money.

Well, purchasing this book is an absolute pre-requisite for anybody who wants to get serious about carrying out in-service inspection and testing (PAT), as it contains the values you need to obtain to pass or fail a piece of equipment. It's also essential to pass the City and Guilds 2377 exams, as the exam references it on nearly every question.

The book is pretty much definitive, and quite well written. The information is quite logically presented, and is very accurate. I haven't found so much as a spelling mistake or a grammatical error in it so far. The annoying thing about it is that the index at the back is quite poor, and many things that are referenced in the examination aren't referenced at all in there (like polarity testing), and alternative names for equipment are mentioned once, and never mentioned again (but you will be asked some transitive and sneaky question about it, for sure)

It also isn't the ONLY thing you need to know for the exam, as you still need two H.S.E. guidance notes (GS38 (test instruments) and PM something (hand lamps)), which is another 7 quid for 4 pages.

This book is the 2nd edition and is no use at all for anyone wanting to do the C&G2377 course. You need the 3rd edition as all the questions are based on the 3rd edition. It's like trying to do a 17th edition wiring course with the 16th edition regs. The 3rd edition has a purple cover and is much thicker (and costs more!)
