Product Description

Product Description

In every workplace there are problem people causing people problems: authoritarians, boasters and coasters, manipulators, martyrs and meddlers. In this text, leading occupational psychologist Peter Honey gives help with the commonest types of office menace. Always start by looking at yourself - you may be making a fuss about nothing, mis-labelling someone a "worrier" rather than "conscientious and caring", or accidentally triggering and "rewarding" other people's bad behaviour. Once you realize what you are contributing to the problem, it becomes far easier to persuade or encourage the person to change.

About the Author

Dr Peter Honey, chartered psychologist, management consultant and the author of over 50 publications, is one of Britain's foremost authorities on interpersonal relations at work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for personal development, but not for a text book., 24 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Problem People is a good guide into dealing with different types of characters that you may encounter either in the workplace, or in other social situations. After you have read it you will be able to put names to the characters outlined in the book! It works well as one of those books that you go back to occasionally, but I don't think you could read it as an actual book, more a topic at a time. One down side is that the format of resolving the poblems is very formulaic for each character i.e. what is the worst case/best case scenario if you either ignore/tackle the problems. It's a good guide for line managers to consult, but I wouldn't recommend it as a back up to any personnel/human resources/social psychology courses-there are some better guides out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best management book I own, 23 Feb 2009
By KB (London) - See all my reviews
This book was recommended to me about 10 years ago - and it's the only text book on management I find I use. I do have plenty of management experience, but for those "I have got NO IDEA HOW TO DEAL WITH YOU" exasperation moments, it's ideal - for each character type, you get 4 options, which will either suggest an approach to try that you hadn't thought of, or will start you thinking creatively about alternative ways of getting to the result you want. Very easy to pick up and dip into as and when needed.
