Product Description

This book presents a passionate first-hand account of the development of the Home Sweet Home (H2S) radar systems during World War II. It provides numerous personal insights into the scientific culture of wartime Britain and details the many personal sacrifices, setbacks, and eventual triumphs made by those actively involved. Sir Bernard Lovell led the group that developed the H2S radar system to identify towns and other targets at night or during heavy cloud cover. H2S was successful during the attack on Hamburg in January 1943 as well as the air war against U-boats in the Bay of Biscay.

From the Back Cover

August 1939 was a time of great flux. The fear of impending war fueled by the aggression of Nazi Germany forced many changes. Young people pursuing academic research were plunged into an entirely different kind of research and development. For Bernard Lovell, the war meant involvement in one of the most vital research projects of the war-radar.

Echoes of War: The Story of H2S Radar presents a passionate first-hand account of the development of the Home Sweet Home (H2S) radar systems during World War II. The book provides numerous personal insights into the scientific culture of wartime Britain and details the many personal sacrifices, setbacks, and eventual triumphs made by those actively involved.

Bernard Lovell began his work on airborne interception radar in Taffy Bowen's airborne radar group. He was involved in the initial development of the application of the 10 centimeter cavity magnetron to airborne radar that revolutionized radar systems. In the autumn of 1941, the failure of Bomber Command to locate its target over the cloudy skies of Europe prompted the formation of a new group to develop a blind bombing system. Led by Lovell, this group developed the H2S radar system to identify towns and other targets at night or during heavy cloud cover. H2S first saw operational use with the Pathfinder Squadrons in the attack on Hamburg during the night of January 30-31, 1943. Two months later, modified H2S units installed in Coastal Command aircraft operating over the Bay of Biscay had a dramatic tactical effect on the air war against U-boats. The tide had begun to turn. In this fascinating chronicle of the H2S radar project, Sir Bernard Lovell recreates the feel and mood of the wartime years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent personal account of the worlds first cm radar, 9 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Radar before this was crude, not a 'picture' of the terrain but more like two oscillocscope traces. Using the newly developed magnetron (which was a powerfull microwave source; nowadays we all have one in our kitchen but in the 1940s they were secret enough to have explosive devices attached to them!). This is the story of the development of radar that could see features on the ground and present it as a movingpicture., of the rivers lakes and cities underneath. Not only did they get this stuff working, they made it robust and compact enough to fit in crude vibrating and electrically noisy world war II bombers. The early RADAR using 1 and 2 metere wavelengths did not give enogh definition, centimeter waves (like the ones you use to make calls on a mobile phone or cook a pizza with) did. Also the seeds of more mordern radar (like doppler looking for moving vechicles on the ground etc.) were experimented with.

Excellent book, part of the secret war of technology behind the scenes in WWII.

5.0 out of 5 stars Echoes of War Sir Bernard Lovell, 9 Oct 2009
By Mr. A. Dagnall - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Excellent semi-technical account of the development of WWll radar by one of the senior WWll scientists. Also a very human book, covering the anxieties, frustrations, pressures and occasional amusing moments experienced by the scientists. The author kept a personal diary of his wartime experiences and, coupled with his WWll records, together with his working links with the main players in the fascinating story of radar development, he has produced a most readable account of his enormous contribution to the radar systems which helped to win the war.
