First published in 1951 "The Modern Text Book of Astrology" remains to this day one of the best standard text books available to students of astrology.

Everything required by a learner to acquire a firm grounding in the basics of astrology is here; including a brief historical background, sound and easy to follow astronomical framework, a concise explanation of computations. The keyword model of interpertation quickly enables the student to make intrepretive judgements free from reliance on reference to the usual 'cookbook' style of textbooks.

A fair and unbiased account of the various house charting systems and other controversial areas within astrology provide the student with the information they need to partake in and judge for themselves the arguments in favour of one house system against another; the questions of fate v. free will; of sidereal v. tropical.

As well as natal astrology and the interpretation of progressions there is also an introduction to the techniques of electional, horary and mundane astrology; a discussion of the pre-natal epoch and the relationship of the precession of the equinox to eras of time.

In summary "The Modern Text Book of Astrolgy" provides all that is required for a comprehensive understanding of the modern approach to astrology and its development alongside modern discoveries in depth psychology.

I was brought up (astrologically) on this book some 20+ years ago and it was 'old' then. It may be a technically excellent book but astrology has developed so much since MH wrote this book and, whilst the basics may remain unchanged, the way in which teaching astrology has developed leaves this book years behind. We have far deeper insights now than were understood 50 years ago and this book obviously cannot include these. This applies particularly as far as psychological insights are concerned.
There are many excellent books which have come on the market since this book was written but I suppose the fact that the book is still available must say something for it.
