More Information
'Draining down a system' is covered in depth on p 41, with more on p154 and other mentons elsewhere. The job only entails closing one valve, opening another and waiting until the water stops, so there's a limit as to how much you can say about it.

The point about this book is that unlike most others on the subject it deals with the kind of plumbing actually found in the majority of homes and what can be done about it. Most books look only at new systems and methods, whereas our book also covers things that went out of fashion years ago but are still found in the real world in people's homes.

When looking to upgrade my heating to a Combi-boiler system with instant hot water. I was looking for a book like this for weeks, I have read other titles, not mentioning any names. I have now completed my goal, not bad for a novice DIYer. Excellent book for plumbing, invaluable for central heating. Jas, Birmingham, England.

I'm going to send this book back. Its very dated and makes virtually no reference to combi boilers or and instant hot water systems. Most annoyingly, it has no section discussing how to change from an older style hotwater and heating system to a combi boiler.

I had to send this back, because it's essentially identical to the 1990 edition which I had already. So, for example, no mention of replacement ceramic mechanisms for conventional taps. With increased emphasis on energy saving in the last 10 years, I was also looking for objective assessment of the merits of CH features like optimum start and boiler compensation - but the CH control system section had actually got less thorough. One of the bugbears of this industry is the very slow dissemination of technical innovation; often the excuse is "there's no call for it". Through books like this, Which? should be countering this attitude by helping create more demanding and knowledgable consumers. This may still be one of the better DIY books on this subject, but Which? should give it much more thorough and frequent overhaul.

Good intro but poor on detail eg draining down a system was a few lines and missed useful detail seen elsewhere. A starter guide rather than a comprehensive one. Read more
