Product Description

Review

"Papers from a June 1998 symposium at an animal production conference in Korea are augmented by essays commissioned to round out the coverage. Contributors from agriculture, food sciences, and philosophy address such concerns as why livestock ethics and quality of life are important, their place in larger systems of food production and philosophy, agribusiness and consumer ethical concerns, an alternative ethic for animals, poverty and the quality of rural life, the intensification of agriculture and free trade, development in Latin America and Africa, and the food-feed dimensions of grain demand in Asia."--SciTech Book News

Product Description

The cloning of sheep, the use of pig xenotransplants and bovine somatotrophin, as well as "mad cow" disease, are all examples of how livestock production is related to food safety, human health, ethics and quality of life. The relationship between intensive developed-world animal production and third world development also raises ethical issues. These topics are addressed in this work, based on papers given at the Eighth World Congress on Animal production held in June 1998 in Korea. Some additional chapters have been added to give more comprehensive coverage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Needed Guide to Tangled Web of Ethical Issues, 13 Dec 1999
By A Customer
The application of science & technology to animal breeding and production is raising ethical concerns in many countries in an era when public caring and spiritual values are widely rising. Ethical, political and trade issues in how we treat farm animals have become headline news. To name but a few: quality of life in factory farming systems; cloning; genetic engineering; "Mad Cow" disease (BSE); transplantation of animal organs into humans; bovine & porcine somatotrophin. Complex cultural, emotional, philosophical and spiritual reactions have emerged to the economic, scientific and technical developments in agriculture. At last an authoritative textbook has emerged to guide us through this tangled and growing web of concern, conflict and debate. This excellent new book "Livestock, Ethics & Quality of Life" does not seek to thrust answers upon us but to clarify the arguments and issues for us so that we can review and understand the range of approaches available and make our own informed assessments. Our way is then cleared to choose a forward direction that is based on clarity, discernment and wisdom rather than fantasy, fear and muddled thinking.
