Product Description

Product Description

This study of boat types is based on a lifetime's personal search conducted around the coastline and rivers of Great Britain. As well as being a descriptive catalogue, it is also an analysis of the factors that determine the shape of a boat, how they operate and why designs vary so much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magnum opus on boats, 12 Oct 2005
By Chris Lawton (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This is a serious work that examines the types of small working boats around the British Isles and details their design and construction characteristics. Designs and tables of offsets and scantlings are also given. If you don't know what offset tables and scantlings are you may find the book rather too technical and turgid, but for keen boaties and boatwrights this book is a gem. Only 4 stars because I think the author got a bit carried away with taxonomy plus the index is rather hopeless. Otherwise I love it.
