The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp is my favourite film, it is a beautiful and moving story and any account must include a personal reaction to the film as well as more advanced criticism and history. However, A.L. Kennedy almost ignores the film entirely and self-indulgently treats the book as her own personal autobiography, I am very miffed with the BFI for publishing this book which is entirely out of keeping with the subject and spirit of the film.

I bought this little guide as my university dissertation was about 'The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp'. As it is only a small text, I hoped it would give me one or two nuggets of information which the more substantial P&P books may have missed.

Unfortunately (and confusingly) this guide seems less about 'Blimp' and more about the childhood of A.L Kennedy, who goes on to state how Powell and Pressburger films brightened up her childhood. The opinions expressed in the booklet are minimal and not to a high standard academically.

On the plus side, the book is budget priced and easy to read, however i'm surprised an institution like the BFI were proud to put their name to this effort, especially as some of their other BFI Classics guides are so good.
