Product Description

Product Description
A dazzling fantasy produced in the aftermath of World War Two, "A Matter of Life and Death" (1946), released in the US as "Stairway to Heaven", is one of the greatest achievements of co-directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Starring David Niven as an RAF pilot poised between life and death the film is a haunting meditation on love, grief and the legacy of war. This book looks in detail at the making of the film as well as locating it in the broadest traditions of British art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every page a delight, 25 Oct 2000
By Stephen Crook "Steve Crook" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A scholarly approach with a wealth of references is just what you'd expect from Ian Christie, Professor of Film Studies and long term admirer of the works of Powell and Pressburger.

This book covers many aspects of this much loved film such as why it was made, where they got their ideas from, how it was received at the time and how it is still much admired over 50 years later.

There is something for everyone in this delightful book.

Only 98 pages but every one a delight.
