ear;y Cooper classic romance, 30 Dec 2007
Written in the 70s this is slightly dated now, but shows all the early sparkle and wit that Jilly Cooper may have lost (based on Wicked). A slightly different heroine, since Harriet has a baby from a failed love affair, but all the spirit, warmth, energy and romance is there. Perfect to revive and refresh your spirit.

Warm, funny and endearing, 13 Oct 2009
I have a secret love for Jilly Cooper novels which started in my teens when I devoured as many as I could get my hands on. Many of them appeal to old fashioned romantic ideals and I like the formula - Girl meets devastatingly handsome boy, boy rejects girl, girl is heartbroken, girl looks for love elsewhere, Mr handsome realises his mistake, happy ending (although not always the one you think is coming)!
Harriet is a warm, funny and endearing tale of a shy student who is forced to leave University to take on a job as a nanny for the children of a temperamental older man. Left in the middle of nowhere with 2 children, a baby and a naughty dog to look after she struggles to cope with her new life.
This is a charming story that has made me laugh and cry every time I have read it.

Good solid writing and romance, 16 Aug 2009
I should preface this review by explaining that this is my first foray into the popular romance genre. I picked up 'Harriet' in a flying visit to a bookshop to help my recovery from a long bout of flu. I went home and read it, quite easily and happily, in one sitting.
From the first, I was surprised by the quality of the writing, which was much better than expected, although my good impression might be skewed by the fact that I read this straight after reading a 'cosy mystery' novel which was poorly written. I think Jilly Cooper has done well within the confines of the genre, supported by a readable, well polished writing style. The setting of this story, in both time and place, is superb.
My only 'problem' is that the heroine is young and attractive, so there is never any real doubt about the hero being interested in her; but this really my 'problem' with the genre as a whole, rather than this particular book.
In summary, I still don't think this genre is for me, but if and when I'm in the mood to try again, I expect I would be in good hands with Jilly Cooper. I'm giving it 3 stars, which is a decent rating from me.
