He shows how armour attained its full Renaissance splendour and then suffered its sorry and inevitable decline, culminating in the Industrial Revolution, with its far-reaching effects on military armaments. Above all, he follows the long history of the sword, queen of weapons, to the late eighteenth century, when it finally ceased to form a part of a gentleman's every-day wear. Lavishly illustrated. This is an good reference book for European armour and hand weapons. Unfortunately anyone expecting 'weapons' to include firearms will be sorely disappointed. Mr Oakeshott gives only a cursory look at blackpowder weapons (15 pages in a book of 288 is not really adequate..). His real interest and focus of the book is in edged weapons (and why not) but this book should titled accordingly.
