Product Description

Synopsis

On Easter Monday 1917 with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - the muddy scarp of Vimy Ridge. The British had failed to take the Ridge, and so had the French who had lost 150,000 men in the attempt. Yet these magnificent colonial troops did so in a morning at the cost of only 10,000 casualties. The author recounts this remarkable feat of arms with both pace and style. He has gathered many personal accounts from soldiers who fought at Vimy. He describes the commanders and the men, the organisation and the training, and above all notes the thorough preparation for the attack from which the British General Staff could have learnt much. The action is placed within the context both of the Battle of Arras, of which this attack was part, and as a milestone in the development of Canada as a nation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent, 25 Dec 2003
By M. P. Dixon "Tosca the Cat" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having read the excellent "Vimy Ridge" by Alexander McKee, I was not certain that a better work could be written on the Battle of Vimy Ridge, I was however wrong.
Berton's book is destined to be one of THE great books on Vimy Ridge and I doubt that a better one will be written for a long time. The actual battle only occupies a small part of the text, the bulk of which is taken up with looking at the build up and preparations for battle. I cannot recall reading a book where the amount of background information is either so great or so meticulously detailed, and one can tell by reading the text, just quite how much work must have gone into researching and checking information.
This is a superb book, and one that I suspect will be read again and again (indeed I am on the 3rd reading!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Flawed, inaccurate to some degree, but still quite readable, 6 Jun 2006
By Kenneth Scheffler (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The late Pierre Berton was Canada's great popular historian, dealing with nation-defining events and eras. Vimy is one of his best known and most popular books, a book that will no doubt be read for generations to come, introducing each to a battle that solidified the Canada Corp's reputation as an elite fighting force. And for that the book should be commended. Unfortunately, as a popular history written by a person by no means an expert on Canada's role during the First World War, the book has its flaws and inaccuracies. Moreover, the attention paid to the German defenders is quite scant, making the account much to unbalanced and not all that reliable. Still, the book is quite readable, and Berton's nack for meshing the story of the individual experiences with the bigger picture makes for some engrossing reading.
