Product Description

Synopsis

Airfields and Airmen of the Somme follows the same highly successful format of the best selling Airfields and Airmen of Ypres. Mike O'Connor takes the reader back to the sites of the Royal Flying Corps' airfields. His descriptions of the pilots of both sides and their action makes excellent reading. These cover the best known, such as von Richthofen (The Red Baron) and unsung heroes. A clear picture of the dangers involved and courage displayed emerges.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy for any enthusiast of WW1 Aviation, 11 Aug 2004
By - "skyvoyager" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is one of a series all about the aces and airfields of the First World War. There are directions on how to find the airfields today, so that any visitor to France could retrace the steps of the aviators who were based at these airfields during the conflict. Also there are photos of the airfields as they were during the war, and also photographs of them taken today enabling the reader to see how the sites have changed over the years.

The book is filled with anecdotes of the various personalities involved as well as directions to the graves of the fallen aviators.

If you are at all interested in aviation of the First World War I would highly recommend these series of books. The author has clearly done a lot of work to produce such a reference. My only slight criticism is that it would have been nice if the modern photos of the airfields could have been in colour- hence 4stars instead of five.

5.0 out of 5 stars Above the mud, 14 Oct 2003
By Budge Burgess (Kilmarnock, Scotland) - See all my reviews

O'Connor has written a number of studies of aerial warfare in the First World War. Here he picks the role of airpower above the battle of the Somme, providing pen pictures of the men, aircraft, and airfields involved. Illustrated in black and white.
