Product Description

Synopsis
This is latest of the well-respected Battleground series of books, and covers a number of aspects of the battle of Arnhem. It concentrates on the landings and the desperate and legendary battle fought by the remnants of 1st Airborne Division in the town of Oosterbeek. The book relies on both historical knowledge and anecdotes from veterans to bring to life the events of those fateful days of late September 1944. Have set the strategic scene on the opening chapter the guide suggests four separate tours around the area, one on foot and the others requiring a car. They can all be completed in a full day, but are structured in such a way that visitors can make their own choice of how and where to visit. For a clear, concise and accurate account of the Arnhem-Oosterbeek battlefield this excellent addition to our Battleground series is unlikely to be beaten.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good guide to the area., 12 May 2004
By A Customer
This very easily read book, as most of the information would already be old news to those in the know, proved to be an excellent basis on which to plan your own tour. For those new to Arnhem, this would be an happy way to introduce yourself into the battle aroud Oosterbeek, Wolfheze, Heelsum and the Ginkelse heide. It was not difficult, with the aid of your own map of the area and a little local knowledge, to make your own tour at home and travel there to see the sites yourself. Frank's guide shows you all the places where such desperate events took place in 1944. Standing in a tree-line, and 'seeing'the Germans just over the road in another wood, makes you wonder how they coped for a few days, let alone for several days. I feel Frank might have spent a little more attention to the south-eastern side of the Cauldron but that would be my only gripe. Mind you, that part of Oosterbeek has changed a lot. A very clear and interesting book.
For example: the Airborne Museum has a 'perimeter-walk', signposted. I missed a sign near 1 Border's location (or did one of those infiltrating Germans nick it?) but was able to continue by consulting his book occasionally.
To sum up: with a little preperation at home one can be right in the middle of a fearsome battle and wonder at the 1st Airborne's exploits.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much more than a tour guide, 27 May 2004
With the 60th Anniversary rapidly advancing and the increased possibility of people taken time out to visit the battleground then I would highly recommend this book. Frank Steer, who I believe runs an excellent tour of this famous battle ground, mixes history and tour guide in perfect balance. The history narrative is well informed and breezy while the guide part is well illustrated.

The book gives so much more though than just an account of a battle and the location of the relevant monument or museum. It looks at who, what, why, when and where. It goes into details about the background to the battle, the plan, the men and the equipment used.

As the title suggests this guide concentrates mainly on the Landing Grounds and Oosterbeek and paints, at times great detail, a vivid picture of what happened, when and where. There is a "sister book" to this which in the same manner covers the battle at the Arnhem Bridge itself, I would recommend buying both and get the complete picture of this heroic struggle.
