Product Description

From the Author
A previously untold story of the unsung heroes at Arnhem

"Arnhem - The Fight To Sustain"; is the story of the units and soldiers who provided the logistic support to 1st British Airborne Division in the battle for the Arnhem road bridge and the subsequent fighting in the nearby village of Oosterbeek in September 1944.

The author was a military logistician in the British Army for 34 years, and has researched original material and spoken to a number of veterans of the battle in compiling what is a compelling story of men and units whose contribution to the support of the fighting elements, and the fighting they undertook themselves, has thus far gone largely un-recorded. This work remedies that omission.

It tells the story of the Royal Army Service Corps, including air dispatch, the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, the Pioneer Corps, the Army Catering Corps and the Royal Engineers Postal Section in supporting 1st Airborne Division. As such, it includes for the first time details about the seaborne element which crossed to Europe in August 1944 and the Airborne Forward Delivery Airfield Group, or AFDAG, which was established to support operations after a successful drop.

Drawing heavily on anecdotal information, and describing in detail the creation of Britain's airborne logistic capability and its first real operational test, this is a powerful story which will be of interest to a wide range of military historians, and, because of the powerful human dimension, a wider audience. It comprises some 65,000 words with around 80 photographs, a number of which are previously unseen originals

All profits made by the author are being donated to appropriate charities.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent insight into an unreported area of the battle, 10 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I ordered and subsequently read Frank Steer's Arnhem - The Fight to Sustain out of loyalty to the author, whom I have known for over thirty years, and because of the subject being covered. Arnhem, for me, was a campaign that symbolised the unequivocal courage demonstrated by all who took part. Any additional information I could obtain would only add to my wonderment of the human psyche. Having spent many years in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps myself (1967-1993) I wanted to read first-hand what it must have been like to provide the vital support to such a beleaguered body of men. Sustenance was their link to survival and not to victory. The book brought to life the unimaginable and using eye-witness accounts it gave me an insight into the minds of the ordinary, and often forgotten, soldiers who were the backroom boys. From the heroism of the air-dispatchers to the audacity of those on the ground, fifty-six years later I am in total awe of their achievements. I can understand why such a book might not appeal to some, even those who have perhaps read other books on the subject or simply seen the film A Bridge too Far, but it is they who are now without the complete story. It is the first book of its kind and Frank Steer made a valiant effort to bring to life an area of battle that, unless you experince it first-hand, has until now gone unreported. Arnhem - The Fight To Sustain might be the first work to focus on logistic support but hopefully it will not be the last.
