Mike O'Connor has presented for the first time a guide for the laymen and cognoscente to the area around Ypres concerning the Air Forces of both sides during the Great War. A lot of guide books have been written on the First War but they have virtually entirely been concerning the Armies.At last we have a superb account of the contribution that the air forces played from being a side show at the beginning to a major player by the end of the war. The area covered is Ypres with, I understand, further volumes covering most of the Western Front. The book itself follows the usual format employed by the Battleground series. In this case it involves airfields and anecdotes concerning these airfields all linked by several tours suitable for a car journey. The photos employed are first class and the maps used clearly legible. Mike O'Connor has an engaging manner of writing and once I started reading it was difficult to disassociate oneself from the text. An excellent book which will be of interest to the First War aviation enthusiast as well as an introduction to the general reader who wishes to further his comprehension of the history of aviation in the Great War.
