Fills a gap but ..., 6 Nov 2002
Much useful information is contained in the book and this reflects a good deal of research and knowledge built up over the years by the author. It is, however, sadly let down on several counts.Spelling mistakes abound as well as inconsistencies in initial capitalisation, abbreviations, spelling, typesetting, paragraph headings, etc. The Army and Navy are referred to one instance as 'brother' services and in another as 'sister' services. Some paragraph headings are on the last line of a page. Proof reading and correction would have improved the readability immensely. Most of the badges mentioned are illustrated. Unfortunately the illustrations do not always appear next to the relevant text, neither are they cross-referenced. There is no index, something that is essential in a reference book. There are descriptions of various uniforms but none are illustrated, the only exception being a photograph of a current band busby. The book covers from the Royal Flying Corps, but with scant mention of the Naval Wing or Royal Naval Air Service, through to the present day RAF. There are sections on cadets and ancillary services such as Civil Air Guard, Air Transport Auxiliary, Royal Observer Corps, etc. The ROC has seven pages devoted just to its history and fewer to its badges; early Observer Corps badges and other ROC badges are omitted. No badges are described or illustrated for the RNAS There is background information usefully including, in many instances, the relevant AMO authorising the badge. There appear to be a few errors in badge descriptions but those that I noted were minor. Some of the rarer, short-lived or unusual badges are missing. Despite my comments it is a useful book which fills a gap in the collector's bookshelf. It is a pity about the lack of good proof reading, the absence of cross-referencing and an index and the lack of uniform illustrations - perhaps the word 'uniforms' should be omitted from the title.
