5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping accounts from the cockpit, 11 Jun 2004
By A Customer
For the service that invented the prerequisites of modern carrier aviation (the angled deck, the mirror landing aid and the steam catapult), the Royal Navy has always seemed a poor cousin to the better-equipped United States equivalent. A lack of resources meant that the post-war RN operated from tiny carriers with dodgy equipment, adding to the danger factor. Defence cuts have since left the Navy without proper carriers, and with the impending demise of the Sea Harrier, no carrier-borne jets at all.

This book is an excellent collection of short stories, by Fleet Air Arm aviators who flew fast jets and helicopters from the heyday of the Royal Navy's modern era. They may not have fought in many wars (the Falklands excepted), but they certainly had their fair share of incidents, accidents and close shaves.

The aircrews' writing style is uniformly amusing and self-deprecating, evocative of a "boys own" adventure that glosses over the readily apparent dangers. The narratives concentrate on specific incidents, so the interest factor remains high throughout. Many of the accounts are illustrated with photos of the events described.

I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the delicate art of flying great big aircraft from tiny ships, and in the mental state of the exceptional people who do it for a living.
