3.0 out of 5 stars A workmanlike effort, 21 Jun 2002
By A Customer
The London Scottish were the first British territorial battalion to go into action during the Great War (1914), fighting gallantly alongside regular British troops to hold the ridges to the south of Ypres. This first engagement proved that territorials were not just 'Saturday night soldiers' and could be trusted in action. Therefore, for a Regiment with a history as distinguished as the London Scottish, I had expected a bit more from this book.

While Mr Lloyd deals faithfully and accurately with the doings of the Regiment he unfortunately fails to capture more of the spirit of the Regiment. This book reads rather like an 'official' history rather than an unofficial one. I had hoped to find greater use of diaries and personal accounts, getting more to the character of the men who formed this Regiment, but sadly these seemed somewhat lacking.

Nonetheless, if your interest is following the progress of the Regiment during the war then I can recommend this book as it carefully traces the Regiments progress both in and out of the line. If you are not an regular to the Great War though you may want to 'flesh' this work out with a few more personal accounts, such as those available in Lyn MacDonald's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book conveying the heroic periods of the London Scottish, 16 Feb 2009
By J. Kidd "worcestersaucejohn" (Worcester, Worcestershire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent history particularly for the Battle of Messines 1914..
The author uses many soldiers letters and journals writtne during or following the events to convey the achievement of a regiment faced with a superior enemy and with defective weapons held their ground

4.0 out of 5 stars Good if you are seeking a start, 6 Aug 2002
By A Customer
There is not enough written or remembered about the Territorials and the place they played in the British military. This book for London Scottish historians, ex-members and intersted parties is certainly a good place to look but yes does not include enough of the local flavour which can be said of many a historical book using primary evidence.

It would be great to see more about the Cadets and other time periods but alas not to be in this book.
