3.0 out of 5 stars A workmanlike effort, 21 Jun 2002

The London Scottish were the first British territorial battalion to go into action during the Great War (1914), fighting gallantly alongside regular British troops to hold the ridges to the south of Ypres. This first engagement proved that territorials were not just 'Saturday night soldiers' and could be trusted in action. Therefore, for a Regiment with a history as distinguished as the London Scottish, I had expected a bit more from this book.

While Mr Lloyd deals faithfully and accurately with the doings of the Regiment he unfortunately fails to capture more of the spirit of the Regiment. This book reads rather like an 'official' history rather than an unofficial one. I had hoped to find greater use of diaries and personal accounts, getting more to the character of the men who formed this Regiment, but sadly these seemed somewhat lacking.

Nonetheless, if your interest is following the progress of the Regiment during the war then I can recommend this book as it carefully traces the Regiments progress both in and out of the line. If you are not an regular to the Great War though you may want to
