Helped enormously during a recent visit to the Ypres/Ieper area. The book gave a real insight into the battles and it was great to have guided walks to follow. The points of interest are clearly described and very informative.
The book states a total length of time that any walk will take, and on the whole this is accurate at a strolling pace. However, it would have been useful if a map of each walk had been provided. This is because there are few indications of distances - I would have liked to have seen the total distance of the walk stated, and more particularly the distance between turns/landmarks on the walk. There is no indication whether the 'grass track' one needs to follow is 10 metres or 3km from the last direction followed, and this added uncertainty (and on one occasion 45 minutes through missing an immediate turning!).
I would recommend this book if you are visiting the area and want an understanding of what you are seeing.

The book is extremely well-researched and -written, good value, and the individual walks allow you to "be there". For some of the walks, to see what YOU want to see, you may have to stitch two or more of the walks together. One thing I found lacking which would have been a great advantage, was a map of the entire area, so that you could see the full scale of the battlefield, flashpoints, trench lines etc. and plan your visits. It's difficult to envisage, now that there are so many new roads and buildings, so a map marking landmarks of the time (eg. Hellfire Corner, the Caterpillar, the extent of the Messines Ridge) would be great help. As it stands, I would recommend also buying the CWGC map/pamphlet entitled "Cemeteries & Memorials in Belgium & Northern France", (costs 10 Euro) although that focuses on cemeteries rather than the battlefields.
