Product Description

Synopsis

This is the story of a Fleet Air Arm squadron engaged in what Churchill called "the most vital battle of all" - the Battle of the Atlantic. Russian convoys, the Atlantic and Gibraltar are seen through the eyes of the aircrew whose courage and flying skill played an important role in helping the merchant vessels fight their way through. Written by a man who joined the squadron on the day it was formed, and became its commanding officer, the book offer an account of a close-knit group of men flying in conditions of extreme hazard on some of the most demanding missions of the war.

5.0 out of 5 stars alone on a wide, wide sea, 23 Aug 2007

(REAL NAME)
This is a book written by a pilot not an historian . It gives an accurate and sometimes humourous account from the authors point of view of life in the FAA . There are too few books written about the escort carriers , their crews and the pilots , navigators and FAA service personnel that contributed so much to the survival of this country and Europe during WW II.The hazards of the North Atlantic where enough for those who served in the ships let alone the risk of flying in appalling weather with little or no chance of survival if you had to "ditch".This is a book to read more than once . It is a reference and a glimpse into the hardships and sacrifice that hopefully future generations we will never have to experience.
