Look at many of the reviews of books offering you help with improving your writing and you will probably find the same thing - people claiming they offer good, solid advice. However, I have read a number of similar books, ones that people have unjustly raved about and in my view, none of them are as good as this.

Firstly, this book is short, succint and very, very clear. If you are keen to start writing a novel, you will have plenty of research to do so you don't want to have to work through 500 pages just to get started.

Secondly, this book is written with specific reference to the novel writing process so doesn't get bogged down by trying to include poetry or non-fiction writing meaning you can get on learning about the things you need to know. However it isn't a 'guaranteed to make you write a hit novel' type of book; there is no winning formula.

Thirdly, this is the most unpretentious creative writing book I have ever come across. So many others make you feel like you have to be some kind of conduit for creative flow and have to have kept diaries and written stories for as long as you can remember. Dianne Doubtfire is sensible enough to realise that there is no such thing as the typical writer and simply provides straightforward advice to those people who would like to writie a novel. Conversely, many other books go the opposite way - assume you are someone who isn trying to shamelessly treat writng as a 'career' and don't care for the creative & personal element of your work. Again, this book avoids doing this and makes no judgements about why you are wishing to writie a novel.

The only drawback is perhaps this book is too wise and practical in the sense that she advises a cautious and measured approach to your first novel and some people may find that stifling to their ideas. However, this shouldn't put you off a book which is constructive whilst being concise and should help you on the path to your first novel.
