5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but not for the backpack., 9 Mar 2003
By A Customer
There is no shortage of guide books for the British Lake District but this one is different to the others I've seen. Produced by the Fell and Rock Climbing Club it covers all 244 fells over 300 metres. Separated into geographical areas (Far E/E/Central/S/N/NW/W) it then allocates a page to each fell, or closely grouped fells, with a detailed description of the walk, a map (usually indicating parking) and a colour photograph. It is well indexed to help you find what you want. It is beautifully produced with very good quality paper in a hardback, 17 x 24 cm, with 214 pages. This means it is heavy!

In fact it is not the sort of book to take with you on a walk, but it is one you should not be without in the guest house or cottage to plan the next day. You can string your own walks together rather than rely on the usual well-beaten guide-book paths. It is also a great winter read for three season walkers like me and a handsome tome to have on the bookshelf at home.

Note for anyone not familiar with the UK: a fell in the Lake District is to all intents and purposes what passes for a mountain in the UK. If you think that from 300 to a maximum 978 metres can't be real mountains then you'd better get along there with this book and check them out.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lakeland Fells Illustrated Guide, 11 Dec 2006

(REAL NAME)
As a regular fell walker, I have only recently decided to start 'ticking off' the Wainwrights. For anyone who wishes to record their ascents, this book is ideal. It lists all of the Wainwrights area by area with full walk descriptions and great photography.
There's a tick and date section at the back of the book to enable you to record your climbs.
For those who want more, there's also a full list of the Outliners too.
From the walker who wants a short, easy day to a full days winter walker, this book is superb.
