There is no shortage of guide books for the British Lake District but this one is different to the others I've seen. Produced by the Fell and Rock Climbing Club it covers all 244 fells over 300 metres. Separated into geographical areas (Far E/E/Central/S/N/NW/W) it then allocates a page to each fell, or closely grouped fells, with a detailed description of the walk, a map (usually indicating parking) and a colour photograph. It is well indexed to help you find what you want. It is beautifully produced with very good quality paper in a hardback, 17 x 24 cm, with 214 pages. This means it is heavy!

In fact it is not the sort of book to take with you on a walk, but it is one you should not be without in the guest house or cottage to plan the next day. You can string your own walks together rather than rely on th
