Product Description

Review
"Overall, this book is well written and illustrated, but requires effort to get through. This isn't a criticism of the author, who did an outstanding job of conveying information and clearly explaining complex concepts and topics, but reflects the depth of the material. In my opinion a copy of this book should be among the top five in any serious software test professional's library." - Mike Tarrani, Amazon.com Top 50 Reviewer, Tustin, California

Product Description
The software development world has changed in the years since the bestselling first edition was written. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) and Java have emerged as industry standards. This comprehensive follow-up reflects these advancements, while retaining the easy-to-understand approach of the first edition. Software Testing: A Craftsman's Approach, Second Edition covers the functional and structural approaches to software testing, describing each approach in practical terms, and illustrating them with continuing examples. The author includes new figures, a new case study, and provides software. Students and practitioners will not want to be without this up-to-date, single resource for software testing technology.

4.0 out of 5 stars Becoming serious competition to Beizer., 9 Jun 2008
Jorgensen's book is IMO the first serious competition to Beizer's now classic "Software Testing Techniques" and "Black Box Testing". It covers more ground - though arguably in less depth - than Beizer, notably in its accounts of thread-based testing, OO and GUI testing. I also think its coverage of boundary value testing clearer than Beizer's, although conceptually less general.

Topics span the field from low-level white-box testing to high-level testing based on threads. Jorgensen is particularly good, IMO, in illustrating the variety of ways in which the thread concept can be applied. In covering such a wide range, he provides most of the technical underpinning one needs to develop technically coherent test management programmes, although he does not much discuss test management itself.

On the donwside the treatment of the underlying maths, mainly graph theory, is a little lightweight for my taste. This will, however, probably endear it to software engineers who have got through their degrees without acquiring any noticeable mathematical literacy :-O

I now routinely recomend this book, together with Beizer's "Software testing Techniques" and Hetzel's "Complete Guide to Software Testing" to my clients and to software engineers embarking on testing projects. It should be on every professional tester's bookshelf.

Note that this review is of the second edition as I haven't got my hands on the third yet (unsubtle hint to the publishers to let me have a review copy ;-).
