4.0 out of 5 stars On-scene Guide for Crisis Negotiators review, 16 April 2004
It is evident from the outset that this man knows what he is talking about, with justifying examples of many of his points, which are intelligent and precise in themselves. Although he can generalise sometimes, stereotype and pigeonhole people as antisocial or having a borderline personality disorder, the general tone is one of experience with analysis.
I am someone who gets very easily distracted, but this book is practical, stimulating and accessible, you don't have to be a policeman to understand it, although not all of his phrasings are explained fully and may require further reading.
Highly reccomended but not as non-judgemental as perhaps it could be, but what do i know..

5.0 out of 5 stars Revealing insight for the non practitioner, 12 April 2009
By G. Elphick (Reading UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Reading this book as a UK police negotiator for over a decade I'd say this incredibly experienced FBI author/trainer hits the nail right on the head. Law enforcement training and the often highly stressed work itself within crisis negotiation is amongst the most demanding and exacting to be found anywhere in the world. And the learning never stops. It is often, truly, a matter of life or death. All are volunteers on 24/7 'on call', most with busy police 'day jobs' already. The most revealing quote from the book (by a tactical ops sniper) is, "Negotiators have it easy compared to their tactical ops colleagues who have to master multiple skills". Right, in a way; negotiators only have to learn one thing - people. He rightly debunks the often used description of negotiators 'talking people out'. The real skill is 'listening people out'. Highly recommended, even to negotiator colleagues. And once you've read it, as they say on the course - the rest of the night is yours!
