This book is the written equivalent of the film It's A Wonderful Life; that is,guaranteed to bring a tear to your eye and make you go "Aaah!"
It's about an old lady,Amelia Berry,her widowed daughter Mary and her two little girls,Jane and Frances,who all live together in a cottage near to Caxley (Miss Read readers will know where that is). They don't have much money,but there is so much warmth and love in that little cottage that no-one ever misses the luxuries that others may have. the girls are given "A doll each,beautifully dressed in handsewn clothes, a game of Ludo for Frances and Snakes & Ladders for Jane,and a jigsaw puzzle apiece"
A mouse in her bedroom scares old Mrs Berry so much that she decides to spend Christmas Eve downstairs by the fire, then,hearing a noise,she comes across a small boy who has run away from home,seeking food and shelter in the kitchen. Mrs Berry realises that there is not much difference between this little fugitive and the frightened mouse upstairs,and the kind and wise way she deals with both of them will bring a tear to your eye. This is such a simple and lovely tale,dealing with the real meaning of Christmas, "Peace and Goodwill to All!"
