This is a book of great beauty and of great fascination. In essence, it is a photographic journey from the Dogana at the mouth of the southern end of the Grand Canal all the way to the Papadopoli Gardens at the northern end; and then a return trip from the railway station to the Doge's Palace. All photography (by Mark Smith) is in a strip form at right-angles to the canal. It is amazing, and must have taken a lot of (computer?) work to ensure the joins were ironed out, and (almost) all the people removed, and the sky was turned forever blue, which of course it always is in Venice.

The journey takes up 179 pages, thus allowing you to see all the buildings along both sides of the canal in some detail. The bottom quarter of each page has a running commentary on all the palazzi, casas, churches and bridges.
