4.0 out of 5 stars Very good kanji dictionary for begginers, 11 Nov 2001
This is a very good kanji dictionary for those of us facing for the first time with kanji. It uses 'Core meanings', which tell you, in one word, the most comprehensive meaning of a kanji, so you can learn a kanji meaning very easily. It has handwritten (semicursive and cursive) forms, chinese forms, and for almost all kanji stroke order. It orders meanings by usage, it has examples and even some historical notes!

The only limitation is that, althought it has about 3600 characters, there are often 'non-standard' forms, so expect about 2500-3000 differente characters. Some times you come across with kanji not in it, not being that rare.

Halpern invented the SKIP look-up system, which enables you to find a character easily, based on its pattern. You can even look up directly in the dictionary (i.e., not in an index). Of course has the traditional radical index.

I recommend it to any serious student of japanese in the begginer-intermediate level.
