5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent historical / cultural reference, 7 Dec 2006
By DD (Ireland) - See all my reviews
Like "Lost Japan" and "The Crysanthemum and the Sword" this book provides a valuable insight into the culture and history of Japan and the Japanese. The book provides a highly in-depth look at cultural developments in Japanese history. In my opinion it's essential reading for people who are greatly interested in Japan, it's history and people.
I can only agree with the previous review by saying that it's a little long. It's really fascinating overall so this is certainly excused.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not an introduction to Japanese thought at all, 11 Jul 2006
By gigidunnit (Tokyo, Japan) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Be careful. This isn't an introduction to Japan, to Japanese etiquette, or to Japanese thought. It's a fairly indepth discussion on Japanese business practices and ethics. It won't give much guidance to those going to Japan to teach, holiday, live or marry. Equally, it doesn't cover things such as bowing, presenting your business card, or how to address people.

It's a hefty book, too -- almost 400 pages consisting of 230 short essays, each on a different concept such as (at random) "mizuhiki torihiki" or "onaji kama no meshi". It's hard going, but it's not a reference work either. The only way to tackle it is to start at the beginning and read the whole thing, since for most people the concept names won't mean anything and you're unlikely to ever hear them referenced by name.

I bought this book thinking it was more general than it is. I got to page 80 or thereabouts before I grew impatient for information that did NOT relate to Japanese business practices and boardroom negotiations. I expected the book to move onto other aspects of Japanese life later. And then I realised that the entries are in alphabetical (romaji) order. In other words, it's all the same, all the way through.

For a businessman who needs to understand corporate dealings with the Japanese (ie, "what did I just do wrong, that our negotiations broke down?") this might form a useful, if daunting guidebook. Everyone else is better off finding a more general guide to Japanese etiquette and thought -- there are plenty to choose from.

Finally, despite the clever title (the book was originally published in 1994 -- so much of its information is slipping out of date now -- as "Dictionary Of Japan's Cultural Code Words", which makes much more sense), you will NOT learn what the Japanese word for "it" actually is!

3.0 out of 5 stars For Business People, 2 Jul 2009
By Dr. A. Sahal (Sheffield, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Just to reiterate, this is squarely aimed at business people with each word/phrase explanation being steered toward that kind of example. One can infer other meanings but the business perspective becomes tiresome after a while unless, I presume, that's what you're after.
