5.0 out of 5 stars Truly disconcerting, 19 Feb 2007
By I. Burke "Ian B" (Sunderland UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'll keep this short to avoid any spoilers.
I'm a big fan of 'End of the world' type stories ranging from Domain by James Herbert to The Rift and anything involving Zombies. It's been a while since I read anything that left me feeling unsettled, (really since I read Domain about fifteen years ago).
The book is well written which just makes the fairly unpleasant subject matter work all the better, the quality of the writing is excellent, something that's been sadly lacking in a number of novels I've read recently.
So, I'm not going to spoil it at all, suffice to say that I've loaned my copy to three people, they've all gone on to buy the author's other two books.
It's the end of the world, but via a really original route :)

4.0 out of 5 stars 80s stile horror, 31 Jan 2008
By Smokey (Scotland) - See all my reviews
This is a great fast paced enjoyable read. If your one of these people who needs everything explained then don't read it because you'll end up pretty unhappy. If on the other hand you loved 80s horror movies that made your skin crawl but didn't waste a lot of time explaining how the monster came about you'll love it. Its action packed and i'll definately be reading her other three books now.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous apocalyptic horror with gaping plot holes., 12 Jan 2008
By russell clarke "stipesdoppleganger" (halifax, west yorks) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
For an apocalyptic end of the world as we know it book to work really work it has to feel real, like it could really happen. If you apply cold hard logic to most horror novels they don't, stand up but the best manage by deft writing, solid characterisation and unyielding plausible plotting to be both thrilling and intellectually invigorating. "World War Z" by Max Brookes is the finest example of this but "Dying To Live" By Kim Paffenroth, David Moody's "Autumn " series , E E Knights "Vampire Earth" series and David Wellingtons "Monster" series are all also good examples of this type of genre. Then you have books like "Breeding Ground" -something shoddily thought out , with clichéd characters and most detrimentally a central premise that is more likely to invoke guffaws rather than groans of terror.
Set in England so at least it makes a change from America- Breeding Ground has women all over the country suddenly becoming fat , eating raw meat and smelling awful(That may be something to do with the raw meat diet). Abruptly every male who lives with a women inflicted with these ailments (There are exceptions though why is never explained , like much of what happens) is paralysed while the women give birth to white spider like creatures that then feed off the live males.
So far so daft....except that Matthew Edge is allowed to escape by his pregnant wife Chloe and soon hooks up with other survivors including some women who miraculously remain un-impregnated by the spider creatures (The survivors call them "widows") They make their way via a perilous journey where they discover the "Widow's" bite is infectious, to some research/ military facility where they discover other survivors and a little community is formed though one not without its own tensions and its these as much as the threat offered by the "widows" that start to erode the groups safety.
Breeding Ground is fine as a pacy not too hard on the chugging brain cells entertaining read and maybe that's what Sarah Pinborough was aiming for, but taken as anything else it fails. Too much here is down to vague exposition -the outbreak is put down by one person airily as being something to do with GM crops which had me laughing out loud. Deaf people's (And Dogs) blood is lethal to the "Widows"- a plot development that again had me snorting till my ears popped... ..ironically. Matthew -in a sex scene of quite consummate cringe worthy awfulness- copulates with the first women above the age of consent he meets -mere days after watching the wife he professed to adore earlier in the book plop the half eaten foetus of their child on the kitchen floor. There is other silliness on top of this and way too much is left unexplained
Horror done well....and it is hard to do well , is a vital genre that can cover manifest conditions of the human soul .Horror done just for the sake of being horrible can be a good read too but horror for the sake of being horrible (Sarah Pinborough may feel the GM angle is some warning about not to mess with nature but its so clumsily handled it cannot be taken seriously) but poorly written is just well horrible I suppose. Breeding Ground is horrible horror.....not a recommendation in my opinion.
