4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly enjoyable read, 9 Sep 2009
The Reckoning opens with one of the main characters, a successful writer, feeling at odds with himself and his lifestyle. He is drawn back to his childhood home, a place he had been trying to forget for a long time, where a web of sinister secrets unravels through time, reaches into the present and inevitably, exacts payments along the way.

I am not a huge fan of horror. No, scratch that, I really dislike horror, so imagine my surprise when I found myself enjoying The Reckoning. It is actually more of a fantasy mystery with elements of horror and this was what made it appealing to me. The main characters were well defined and progressed through the plot in a way that held my interest throughout. There was enough mystery and suspense to keep me going until I've read the whole book; not exactly in a 'can't put it down' way, but not far off either. While it may not rock the world of the hard core horror reader, I can definitely recommend The Reckoning to anyone who likes a good, and a little bit scary whodunit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Run-of-the-mill horror, 16 Jun 2008

(REAL NAME)
The book starts off well and is certainly well-written, but I got the impression that the author wasn't too sure how to finish off the story. Basically, it's a "bad place" story about adults having to cope with evil events that happened in childhood and blighted their lives, but character development could have been better and the ending is the sort I've seen again and again in films etc. This book is fine for reading on an aeroplane, but it isn't one I'd ever want to reread.
