4.0 out of 5 stars Balanced reflection on LOTR from a Christian viewpoint., 28 April 2002
By A Customer
This is a concise and clearly-written exposition of how Tolkien's faith and Christian world view informed not only "The Lord of the Rings" but also "The Hobbit" and "The Silmarillion", where the various strands of "back-story" are to be found. It's apparent that "Finding God..." has been written from an Evangelical standpoint (there are quite a few specifically Catholic themes which are to the fore in LOTR which Bruner and Ware haven't chosen to explore, which is a shame) but it's a balanced invitation to reflection...

3.0 out of 5 stars Private view points destroy great potential, 15 May 2002
By danielattard4@optusnet.com.au (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
The idea behind this book was brilliant but it's obvious that the author's are not the devout Catholics that Tolkien was. Tolkien on numerous occasions sited the Catholic faith as his inspiration for the Lord of the Rings epic. Saying that all the characters and the story as a whole foretold the endless stuggle between good and evil, and it's a shame that the author's have dicided to leave Tolkiens inspiration out. They talk about his inspiration but have heavy trimmed it down.

Overall the content of the book is good, but if they stuck to the real Tolkien, it would have been a five star book for sure.
