Titan Books continue their series of novels based on Classic Star Trek with #23: The Covenant Of The Crown by Howard Weinstein.
This novel makes references to the classic Trek episode `Errand Of Mercy' and to the animated episode `The Pirates Of Orion' (written by Weinstein as well) and takes place sometime within a year after the events of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Eighteen and a half years ago, when Kirk was a Lieutenant Commander, he was assigned to protect the King of the planet Shad. The Shaddan people were being split by civil war and the Loyalists were having a hard time fighting the Mohd Alliance. Starfleet became involved when it became clear that Klingons were arming the Mohd.
Although the planet did not have a strategic location, its value was that it provides energy crystals to power over twenty local planets and whoever controls Shad, controls the region. The Klingons would like nothing better to take Shad and take a large part of space for their Empire.
Kirk is ordered to save the Royal Family, led by King Stevvin, to ensure that the bloodline and the scared covenant of the Crown is maintained - a symbol of great power and significance to the Shaddan people.
Now, years later, the Loyalists are on the verge of breaking under the might of the Mohd Alliance and Kirk is ordered to take Stevvin, his daughter Princess Kailyn, and his staff back to Shad to rally the Loyalists and stop the Mohd. Stevvin is now so old the reigns of power are to be passed to Kailyn but in order for her to unite the people she must journey to Sigma 1212 and retrieve the crown from its mountainous hiding place and prove she is fit to lead.
While Kirk and the Enterprise tackle Klingon agents in the area, Spock, McCoy and Kailyn head in a shuttle to Sigma 1212 to get the Crown. When their shuttle crashes in an ion storm, the chances for their, and Shad's survival look grim.
This story is a basic adventure saga in the Trek universe. The story is engaging, the characters are well drawn and Weinstein creates some memorable secondary cast for the plot. The struggles of Spock, McCoy and Kailyn on Sigma 1212 are entertaining, reminiscent of the planet in Spock's Brain from time to time and also `Last Of The Dogmen' for those who've seen it. The developing relationship between the three and Kailyn's rather sudden `growing up' outside of the isolation she has known all her life is beautifully written.
Slightly more accessible than his previous novel (#2 Deep Domain), this is a good yarn and a nice addition to the Classic Trek series.
