In their July 2001 issue, Total BMW magazine comment of this book in their opening paragraph: "There are 3-Series books already out there but this beats them all to pulp. Written by BMW expert Jeremy Walton, the BMW Enthusiast's Companion leaves no stone unturned in charting the history of the car from the 2002 age to the 340 bhp E46 M3. If you wanto to know it then it's in here somewhere."

There is more in a similar positive vein, but potential buyers should note that the title was published in the USA. It does cover all the major European moves and even some of the more obscure South African specials, but British model changes are not specifically covered. In 368 pages and more than 350 black and white illustrations there are myriad facts and figues, plus the full 7-chapter story on three generations of M3 and their racing cousins.
