5.0 out of 5 stars Why are some women drawn to angry men?, 10 Feb 2009
Fascinated as to why some people are drawn to repeat disastrous relationships; this book was suggested to be by an old friend from America from where the author, a priest comes. Paul Hegstrom and his wife are very open about their relationship, what happened next, and how in the end - after many years of separation, they were able to begin to trust and then love and marry one another once again. Hegstrom looks into his past, explains how he become an abuser. He recognised that he had the ability to change and writes about how hard it was for him to recognise his own problems and grow through them. Although a practicing Christian priest this book doesn't suggest that all it down to God's intervention, far from it. Hegstrom is very honest and the book is a good read for people of faith and those with an interest in personal relationship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review, 4 Oct 2008
By Sirina (Essex England) - See all my reviews
Not knowing much about the background of the reasons of why angry men abuse it was written in a way that is useful for the abusive man to understand himself but also the professional who might be counselling the men.
It begins with a chapter from the author who admits to being abused as a child and having abused his wife. Knowing he was pastor took me by surprise but coming from the catholic background it shouldnt really have been. What I was impressed with, was his openess about his story and the owning of his behaviour. This for me was a true testimont to how he has changed and now making amends for his past actions. It then goes into his wifes story and her intentions to eventually leave him.
Although the title says "and the women who love them" I felt the balance was exploring the abusers side rather than why the woman stays. So I would have liked to see more analysis of why women puts up with it.
The only irritating part for me was that this very informative, academic and easy to read book was excessively sprinkled with quotes from the bible. The reader can either ignore those (as I did) or be fascinated by them.
Included in this book was the physiological effect that previous trauma has on the individual. I had no idea of the pattern that was so ingrained in the physiological make up of the individual, fascinating.
The inclusion of a chapter on healthy relationships was insightful of the author as it would be very important for both the abuser and the abused to recognise and be guided by for future changes to occur.

An overall excellent book that took me just hours to read because it was so difficult to put down.
