5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, well researched, well written, 2 Jul 2007
By S. Gilmore (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book takes a look at some of the modern ways of 'rewriting' the story of Jesus. The author is a respected scholar, and this is obvious from his depth of knowledge on the subject. He investigates many of the 'claims' about Christ in supposedly 'original' gospels, providing insight into where these gospels came from, and a balanced review of probable dates of the various accounts.

He tackles works like The Gospel of Thomas, The Gospel of Mary, The Gospel of Judas and The Secret Gospel of Mark, showing and examining various theories of their origins. The content of these gospels is reviewed breifly.

There are very interesting sections devoted to an explanation of how gospels and historic documents in general can be dated, how reliable they are and so on - this provides a fascinating introduction to this area.

He also reviews the work of scholars which relies on taking gospel writings out of context and re-writing history; the findings of the Jesus Seminar are discussed repeatedly.

The book is written with good humour and an obvious concern for good scholarship; it is accessible and informative and an excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best correction of Jesus-revisionism I've read, 20 Mar 2007
An excellent correction to much fashionable Jesus scholarship by a giant in the field. Though written for the intelligent non-expert, this book never compromises on substance. It is persuasive and worthy of careful attention. (And for those who wish to study further, there is a good deal of helpful bibliography in the very reader-friendly notes.) If you want a level-headed and erudite assessment of the Jesus Seminar and the likes of Bart Ehrman, read this book.
